The Greater Los Angeles Amateur Radio Group VEC is one of the 14 FCC-recognized Volunteer-Exam Coordinators conducting amateur radio exams. GLAARG is a VEC testing organization, not a radio club. Our exam fee is $10 for remote exams and $10 for in-person exams. Exam fees are waived for minors, students with a current ID, Active Military, Veterans, and GLAARG VEs upgrading to Extra.
GLAARG Exam Sessions: Take An Exam
Remotely Administered Exam Sessions
GLAARG exam teams have conducted over 2000 exams since April 2020, meeting the demand for amateur radio exams during the pandemic. See this page for more info: Remote Exam FAQs.
GLAARG VEs can find more information about remote exams here: http://glaarg.org/examtools-tier-2-training-videos/
Applicants can register for a remote exam here: https://hamstudy.org/sessions/glaarg. It doesn’t matter where you are, or where the session manager is. It is very important to be aware of the time zone of the exam.
In order to take an exam online or at a local location, you must register for an FCC Reference Number (FRN). If you already have an FCC license of any kind, you probably already have an FRN. Click Here to register on the FCC’s FRN registration page.
For Local Sessions Please fill out Section #1 of the license application, Form 605. You can download the form from our forms page: glaarg-forms
As of Feb 7, 2017, GLAARG VEC no longer requires a paper copy of your license because our VE teams will verify your license by looking it up in the FCC ULS database. In remote areas, without Internet access, it might be good to bring a copy of your license, but if the VE team accepts your claim to be licensed, that’s good enough.
For identification, you will need a government-issued, signed picture ID (Driver’s License or Passport, for example). Some VE Teams require a second form of identification, such as a signed credit card or utility bill that shows your name and address as it is on your other ID. The VE Team must be satisfied as to your identity.
Finding a VE Session Near You Currently few teams are doing local sessions due to the pandemic and you should verify with the session manager to see he is holding an exam.
Most GLAARG VE Teams hold sessions on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. GLAARG might be able to arrange a VE Session for a group – contact naomi@glaarg.org to request a session. GLAARG is a small VEC in terms of people, but we are the 4th largest of the VECs in terms of number of exams held per year.
GLAARG Exam Sessions are listed on this website, at:
http://glaarg.org/exam_sessions/ The exam fee is $10 for in-person exams and $10 for remotely administered exams.
